Civic Education

Have Gavel, Will Travel!

Missouri judges are actively reaching out to the community to provide presentations to school groups, and civic and professional organizations about relevant and interesting topics regarding the judiciary. For instance, middle school students are enjoying the interactive program called, “Can the school search you and your stuff?” That is just one of 12 presentations on topics for all ages that you can request. A judge will come to your school, community group, senior center, library, college or meet with you through videoconferencing to provide the interactive, free presentation.  Civic education continues during the pandemic through online presentations.

You can find out more about the presentations that are offered through this link: https://www.courts.mo.gov/CivicEducation/presentations/. Just click on the Request this Presentation link in the box that describes the program after you have decided which presentation you would like to see.

In addition, the Discover Missouri Courts website has more resources for you to check out at https://www.courts.mo.gov/CivicEducation/

A Missouri Civic Education video that was made in conjunction with the National Center for State Courts about the role of courts in our society is linked here.

And finally, you are also welcome to reach out to the public information officer for the Jackson County Circuit Court to request that a judge visit with your group about a topic that may not be included in the 12 presentations offered through the Have Gavel, Will Travel program. For assistance contact: Valerie Hartman, Public Information Officer, 816-881-3552 or valerie.hartman@courts.mo.gov

The judges would appreciate the opportunity to visit with you about current topics of interest related to the third branch of government.
