POSITION PURPOSE AND EXAMPLES OF WORK:

To provide timely, efficient, and professional service of a variety of legal papers to individuals, businesses, and governmental agencies.


MAJOR TASK STATEMENTS AND REPRESENTATIVE ACTIVITIES

60% Serve legal papers on persons and businesses located in Jackson County; post or serve eviction notices. 20% Complete documentation and records regarding service, attempted service, revisions, etc. 15% Contact respondents and attorneys in regard to time of service, addresses, appropriate person to serve, etc. 5% Attend training and meetings; serve on Court or Department committees as directed.
EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt

SUPERVISION OF: None

SUPERVISION BY: Director, Assistant Director and Supervisor, Civil Process Deputies and Process Servers at Circuit Court; Coordinator, Support Unit at Family Court. Provide general supervision.

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITY: External: Serves court documents and answers inquiries regarding service and court procedures. Internal: minimal requirement.

PRIMARY EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, MATERIALS USED: Personal vehicle; smart phone; calendar and clock or watch; various court and legal documents; Circuit Court: must carry Court issued, concealed firearm, protective body armor, oleoresin capsicum (OC/pepper spray) and other self-defense equipment.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

EDUCATION: High School graduate or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: One year work experience in law enforcement, service of process, or other related fields.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
CIVIL PROCESS: Required to successfully obtain firearm authorization and successfully complete court approved firearm qualification program and wear protective body armor.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work environment and facilities required to work in as well as physical demands and/or mental requirements. (This is not an inclusive list; other tasks/duties may be assigned.)
OFFICE ENVIRONMENT: Employees are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but occasional temperature changes may occur; exposed to various weather conditions when performing field service work. Drives vehicle during day or night to locate and access residences and businesses in year-round weather conditions; significant time walking, standing, and climbing stairs; possible hostile confrontations.
DRIVING/TRAVEL – 70% of time – Required when travelling in the field.
SITTING - 80% of time – Required when driving and when completing personal computer, paperwork, and telephone work assignments.
STANDING - 10% of time – Required when waiting for entrance to building or for someone to answer door.
WALKING - 15% of time – Required when going between vehicle and buildings.
LIFTING/CARRYING - 30 lbs. – Required when lifting or carrying firearms or body armor.
PUSHING/PULLING - 30 lbs. – Required when moving file boxes and departmental supplies; and when gaining access into residences or businesses.
VISION – Must be adequate to drive and perform field service word and to complete paperwork or use personal computer, for completion of reports, forms, and correspondence.
HEARING – Must be adequate for normal conversation with employees, attorneys, plaintiffs, defendants or law enforcement agencies and for communicating via telephone.
SPEECH – Must be able to speak and understand English clearly to provide detailed information by telephone and in person.
CLIMBING/BALANCING – Required frequently when negotiating stairs or performing field services work or when entering or exiting vehicle.
STOOPING/KNEELING/CROUCHING/CRAWLING – Required frequently when performing field services work. or when entering or exiting vehicle.
REACHING/HANDLING – Required on most tasks including driving, handling paperwork, etc.
