POSITION PURPOSE AND EXAMPLES OF WORK:

POSITION PURPOSE: To take and preserve record of courtroom proceedings and furnish transcripts of proceedings.

MAJOR TASK STATEMENTS AND REPRESENTATIVE ACTIVITIES (Percentage of Time): (The information contained herein is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of the job; other tasks/duties may be assigned. The area to which the job is assigned will govern which duties apply. Management reserves the right to amend and change responsibilities, work shift/schedule, facility, or department to meet business and organizational needs as necessary, including but not limited to the re-assignment of employees and positions, elimination of positions, and opening, moving, or closing of facilities and units.)

Varies As outlined in Court Operating Rule 19, record and preserve all courtroom proceedings.

Varies Transcribe record of proceedings and provide transcripts to requesting parties.* Varies Perform courtroom duties. Varies Perform division duties. * Work performed for transcription purposes is not considered to be court work hours; court work hours are considered to be those in which a Court Reporter performs official work for the Court or hours in which the Judge requires the Reporter’s attendance at the work place. Court Reporters must devote all of their efforts to the work of the Court between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., (as well as additional hours as necessary) Monday thru Friday, except for Court holidays. Freelance reporting activities are not permitted during those or other Court working hours.

TERM OF OFFICE: Persons serving as swing/alternate official court reporters shall be a certified court reporter as provided by Rule 14 of the Missouri State Supreme Court Rules and a sworn officer of the court and shall hold office during the pleasure of the Presiding Judge. In the event a new Presiding Judge is elected by the Court en Banc, the swing/alternate court reporter will continue to hold office at the pleasure of that Presiding Judge. On the death, resignation or retirement of that Presiding Judge who is then supervising the swing/alternate court reporter, the reporter shall retain the office of official swing/alternate court reporter until the Presiding Judge’s successor is elected.

SUPERVISION BY (Include level of Supervision): Presiding Judge and/or Chief Court Reporter

Position receives minimal supervision.

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITY: PRIMARY EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, MATERIALS USED: Machine shorthand or stenomask, computer, telephone, and copier/printer/scanner/fax.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge, skills, and abilities required to function at an acceptable level in the position.

· Knowledge of Court Reporter procedures and requirements as required by Court Reporter Certification by the Missouri State Supreme Court.
· Maintain currency in all aspects of reporting profession.
· Skill in the operation of reporting equipment and general office equipment.
